How Can I Get My Kids to Sleep More at Night?

Sleep is important for everyone, but it is especially important for your kids! Not only does proper sleep help them grow and develop, but it can also help them be more attentive and concentrate better during the day.

We know that getting your kids to sleep more at night can often be a struggle, but working with your kids to create a healthy sleep routine will only be beneficial for everyone in your home.

Our AFC Urgent Care Hickory team offers some suggestions on how to create a positive relationship with sleep below, so check it out.

Is My Child Getting Enough Sleep?

Children need more sleep than adults do. While adults should aim for at least seven hours of sleep at night, your preschool-aged children should be getting at least 10 hours of sleep each night. Teenagers should aim for between eight and 10 solid hours of sleep. This time allows your child to cycle through multiple cycles of sleep, which is crucial for growth and restoration.

If those numbers do not currently align with the amount of sleep your child is getting, don’t panic! We understand that sleep patterns and developmental stages can make sleep tricky at times for your kids. The best thing you can do for them is to create a solid and predictable bedtime routine and avoid screens right before bed. Focus on quiet, calming activities instead to help them wind down.

Signs Your Child Needs More Sleep

  • Fatigue throughout the day, especially in the afternoon
  • Under-eye circles or red eyes
  • Concentration becomes an issue
  • Trouble waking up in the morning

How Can I Create a Better Bedtime Routine?

When you are a parent or care for a small child, you will probably hear advice about bedtime routines and the importance of having one. Having a predictable bedtime routine helps your child slowly fall into a pattern of getting ready to sleep. Following the same routine every night actually is proven to help your child fall asleep easier and stay asleep longer.

Aim to keep the routine to around 20 to 30 minutes, and that includes everything from brushing teeth, a warm bath, quiet story time and reading together. If your child feels calm and safe, the chances of a more restful night is hopefully near!

Additional Sleep Tips

  • Relax before bedtime.
  • Keep regular sleep and wake times consistent.
  • Remove screens like TVs, phones and tablets.
  • Make sure your child’s room is quiet and dark.
