How Long Does the Flu Normally Last?

If the flu has made its way into your home, you certainly aren’t alone! There have been thousands of influenza cases across the country this season, and North Carolina is no different. If you are feeling under the weather, seeking treatment and relief is probably at the forefront of your mind.

While the flu is a viral illness and needs to run its course, there are some things you can do to ease your symptoms. Our AFC Urgent Care Hickory team wants you and your family to feel your best, so check out our latest blog explaining influenza below.

Where Did I Contract Influenza?

Your infection could have come from anywhere! Influenza is circulating all over the place, and there are many different strains that can cause illness. It is most commonly transferred from person to person through uncovered sneezes or coughs, though you can also be exposed to it by touching an infected surface and then touching your face.

If you have not gotten the flu shot or your immune system cannot fight off the virus, you can expect to feel sick within four days of the initial exposure. Common early signs of the flu are the beginnings of a cough, a mild sore throat and a runny nose. It’s important to watch your symptom progression if you suspect the flu. While it may start off with mild symptoms, many cases of the flu can quickly turn for the worst and cause a fever, chills and sweats.

5 Signs of the Flu

  • Fever
  • Runny nose/congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Muscle or body aches

When Will I Feel Better With the Flu?

While there is no hard deadline for when you will start to overcome the flu, most people will start to feel better within three to seven days after getting sick. Once your body starts to overcome the infection, you can expect to feel much better. Just be aware that the more pesky symptoms like a lingering cough may stick around for a little while longer.

If your flu symptoms stay mild to moderate, you can treat them at home with rest and plenty of fluids. You can also take some OTC medication to treat your symptoms if you are feeling particularly ill. If you have an extremely high fever, have a severe headache or are experiencing difficulty breathing, you may be developing a more serious infection and you should visit with your care team for further investigation.
